What is a PAN card?

A PAN card is an identity card used for accounting purposes and is also referred as Permanent Account Number card. A PAN card is required to be carried by a person who is eligible to obtain a PAN card. In case you are unable to obtain a PAN card, your date of birth needs to be registered on the PAN card, along with your current date of birth. Your current PAN card number and date of birth is the last time you received the PAN card from a government office, usually at an Income Tax Office (ITO) or an Aadhar Seva Kendra. After you have a PAN card issued by a government office or in the process of acquiring a PAN card, you will not receive your original PAN card number again.

The process of a pan card name change after marriage

The Pan card can also be used to correct gender on PAN card. As per Section 3 of the Income Tax Act, 1961 ( IT Act) the maximum permissible name change is of gender of PAN card holder on account of marriage of either the PAN card holder or his wife or his dependents, after marriage. Change in name can be done through application form that is available at Income Tax website. The PAN card can be renewed after applying for name change using the same form. There is no fee to apply for name change. However, there are certain requirements like complete PAN card record details of the PAN card holder as well as of his wife and children. The PAN card and Aadhaar card have a similar structure where these two are combined and they are called Aadhaar card.

How to update the PAN card online

Step 1: Go to official website of income tax department – https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/

Step 2: On the homepage, you will find a ‘Change of name’ link

Step 3: Click on it, a different window will open.

Step 4: Click on ‘online PAN application form’

Step 5: You have to fill up the form.

Step 6: Fill the required details and click on submit

Step 7: After filling up the form, choose the option for online submission of documents

Step 8: Print the copy and take a print out for future use.

Conclusion

With the amendments in PAN card rules for the new marriage year 2018-19, it is now much easier for the husband and wife to update their PAN card, as the wife may also apply for a new PAN card for herself and get it registered. In case of divorce, either party can update the name on the PAN card.
